The following story truly happened in the early 70s, it was the talk of the town at the time. An affluent community expressed astonishment that a mother could have committed such a cruel act for the sake of defending the upper end of the family’s social standing.
My best friend whose husband was at the time the Minister of Trade knew the evil witchcraft practitioner personally. This was her story:
One day she told me over lunch in a café that one of her acquaintances had just lost her daughter and that she had to make an appearance to offer condolences. Do you want to know how her child died, she asked me. Of course, I was curious. She went on to tell me that this high end social celebrity was against the marriage of her daughter who had her heart pinned on a nonentity in her opinion. The child held onto her choice and quietly eloped with the man one night. They went underground since none of her friends knew where they had gone into hiding. Even the police could not help the family despite the promise of huge settlements if the pair could be found. No leads were found, the couple had left no trace.
This situation angered the mother so much according to servants of the family that on a particular day compatible to demons, she hung one clothing item of her daughter on a special line for this purpose uttering the words: “When this skirt begins to fall apart from the line the marriage of my daughter will be no more.”
The days grew into weeks, weeks into months, before the first disintegration signs became visible. It happened some six months after the mother had hung the skirt on the line, nailed for passing public to see, at the front veranda of their home.
They received the message about the death of her daughter the next day. The circle of my friend never knew how she died, her body was delivered to her parents who kept the cause of her death quiet.
